Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium replaces Roethlisberger for Lemieux

PITTSBURGH -- Disgraced Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has been traded for NHL Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux -- at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium.

Roethlisberger's name has been replaced with Lemieux's on a display that compares the height of elephants with other creatures.

Zoo spokeswoman Tracy Gray says some zoo visitors had expressed concerns about Roethlisberger's name on the display. She says Lemieux, the retired Pittsburgh Penguins star and team owner, is well-known and approximately the same height as Roethlisberger, about 6-foot-5.

With draft day finally upon us, where will the top prospects land?

I'm not a huge mock draft guy, especially before last-minute trades have been made and boards are set. There are enough people cobbling together their best guesses, and it's such an inexact science. Each guess is predicated on so many assumptions, and once one player goes in an unexpected spot, or a trade goes down, the entire mock "board" comes tumbling down.

Steelers discuss Roethlisberger deal with Raiders; Rams say no

The Pittsburgh Steelers have stepped up their efforts to trade two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, but the Oakland Raiders might be the only real option.

The Steelers were rebuffed by the St. Louis Rams over the weekend, but a league source said Wednesday that they also have contacted the Raiders, who need a veteran quarterback and tried to land Donovan McNabb before the Philadelphia Eagles traded him to the Washington Redskins earlier this month.

The Raiders have a history of taking on troubled players such as Roethlisberger, who received a six-game suspension Wednesday for violating the NFL's personal-conduct policy. Also, Roethlisberger's contract isn't hefty and would be easy to absorb in a trade

Corey Dillon faces drunken-driving charge

LOS ANGELES -- Sheriff's deputies say former NFL running back Corey Dillon has been arrested for alleged drunken driving.

The 35-year-old Dillon was booked at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department after being pulled over at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. Bail was set at $5,000.

Other details of his arrest weren't immediately available.

A Seattle native, Dillon was with the Cincinnati Bengals from 1997 to 2003 and the New England Patriots from 2004 to 2006.

Dillon earned a Super Bowl ring in his first season with the Patriots when they beat the Philadelphia Eagles 24-21 on Feb. 6, 2005.

Source: Tebow to watch draft at home

Former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow has decided not to attend the NFL draft in New York City and instead will watch it at his home in Jacksonville, Fla., a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Tebow

According to the source, Tebow believes it would be too hard to get his whole family and his friends to New York in time for the draft's first round on Thursday night.

It is possible the former Heisman Trophy winner won't be taken Thursday, because the second round doesn't start until Friday.

Sources: Roethlisberger ban 4-6 games

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be suspended for four to six games on Wednesday for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy, multiple sources told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen and ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

When the suspension is announced, it will contain conditions that will allow it to be reduced based on Roethlisberger's behavior and compliance with clinical evaluators.

Commissioner Roger Goodell's verdict will reinforce a message that NFL employees will be held to a higher standard than the law.

Dolphins trade Ginn to 49ers

MIAMI -- The fastest draft bust in Miami Dolphins history is bound for San Francisco.

Receiver-returner Ted Ginn Jr. was traded Friday to the 49ers.

The 49ers will send a fifth-round pick in this year's draft to Miami, a source told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen. The three-day draft begins Thursday.

Ginn Jr.

The Dolphins had him on the block even before they acquired Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall on Wednesday from the Denver Broncos.

Dolphins fans began booing Ginn the day he was drafted and never stopped. Taken with the ninth overall pick in 2007, he made only five touchdown catches in three seasons while averaging 13.0 yards per reception.

Ginn was more successful on special teams, scoring on kickoff returns of 100 and 101 yards in the same quarter of a game against the New York Jets last season. He became the first player with two kickoff returns of at least 100 yards in the same game.

Marshall charms in news conference

PLANTATION, Fla. -- Brandon Marshall walked into the room with a clean slate and a new contract that makes him one of the NFL's best-paid receivers. No wonder he wore a grin from earring to earring.

Marshall

One day after being traded by the Denver Broncos to the Miami Dolphins for two second-round draft picks, Marshall held a 20-minute news conference Thursday. Charming and gracious, he said all the right things: He wants to be the best receiver in the NFL while helping his new team win, and because he has learned from past mistakes, the Dolphins need not worry that he'll get into further trouble.

They're gambling he won't. Hours after the trade, the Dolphins gave Marshall a four-year contract extension, and he'll make an average of about $10 million a year through 2014.

If that makes Marshall the face of the franchise, he's fine with the role.

Trade to Jets shocks banned Holmes

NEW YORK -- Santonio Holmes was walking his dog at home Sunday night when he received an unexpected phone call. It was the Pittsburgh Steelers, telling their talented but troubled wide receiver he had been traded to the New York Jets for a fifth-round pick in this year's draft.

Mike & Mike in the Morning
ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter breaks down the Santonio Holmes trade from the Steelers to the Jets. Schefter says this changes the outlook of the draft a bit now that the Jets don't need to look for a WR and the Steelers are in the market for one.

"I was very shocked at first," Holmes said during a conference call Monday. "But, I knew it definitely opened up a lot more doors and a better opportunity for me to start over."

Holmes won't make his Jets regular-season debut until Week 5 of the regular season after the NFL suspended him earlier in the day without pay for the first four games for violating the league's substance abuse policy

Roethlisberger apologizes to NFL, family

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. -- Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who won't face criminal charges after a 20-year-old college student accused him of sexually assaulting her inside a nightclub's bathroom, said Monday he knows he'll have to work to regain the trust of teammates and fans.

UFC 112 Invincible - 2 Titles, 1 Night

Mock draft 1.0

Draft night is like the Oscars for those waiting to be welcomed into the league they have been dreaming about playing in since they were kids. The big event is just a couple weeks away. Naturally, the process is heating up. Time is short, evaluations continue to be solidified, but for the most part teams have their draft boards up and ready to go.

While fervently wishing that I had a crystal ball and could see inside all 32 teams' draft rooms, here is what the first round looks like to me right now. I will do one last mock draft from New York City before Commissioner Roger Goodell officially places St. Louis on the clock. Seeking a surprise? You've come to the right place:

» Rounds 4-7: Saturday, April 24 (10 a.m. ET)

1. St. Louis Rams
Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
Bradford had a tremendous pro day by all accounts. Dr. James Andrews has cleared his injured shoulder medically. Erstwhile, Rams starter Marc Bulger has asked for, and been granted his release. Frank and Joe Hardy solved many cases with fewer clues than those. (Previous pick: Bradford)

2. Detroit Lions
Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State
I'm sticking with the reasoning that the Lions will opt to protect franchise QB Matthew Stafford with this pick, but my radar continues to buzz that one of the elite defensive tackles will be the choice. If so, I'm guessing they'll take Ndamukong Suh. (Previous pick: Okung)

3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
A strong case can be made that Tennessee safety Eric Berry is the best fit here, but I just don't think the Bucs will be able to resist a defensive tackle, and McCoy still really fits. Don't be surprised to read Suh's name in this slot in the not too distant future. (Previous pick: McCoy)

4. Washington Redskins
Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
There should really be an offensive tackle listed here, but with Okung gone, new defensive coordinator Jim Haslett gives a very impassioned, and persuasive pitch for the most dominant defender in college football in 2009. (Previous pick: Suh)

5. Kansas City Chiefs
Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa
Offensive tackle or Berry? Two years ago, the offensive tackle would have been a no-brainer, but Berry's gifts, and especially his ability to cover, gives GM Scott Pioli reason to think outside the box. Remember, he took DE Tyson Jackson at No. 3 last year. (Previous pick: Bulaga)

6. Seattle Seahawks
Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma
This youngster is gaining momentum with each day. In some camps he is rated on par with Okung. (Previous pick: Williams)

7. Cleveland Browns
Eric Berry, S, Tennessee
I'm letting myself be convinced that the Browns will not take a quarterback this high. Berry is exactly what they need to continue rebuilding. (Previous pick: Jimmy Clausen)

Vote: NFL Draft MVPs

As part of the NFL Draft's 75th anniversary, you have a chance to decide the greatest choices of all time.

8. Oakland Raiders
Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland
The Raiders grabbed a Terp last year in WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, and he will be joined by a much bigger Maryland player this year. This NFL Scouting Combine superstar heads to Oaktown. (Previous pick: Berry)

9. Buffalo Bills
C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson
Running back became even more of a need given Marshawn Lynch's unhappiness. If one of the top three offensive tackles is still available, though, young Mr. Spiller may be left in the starting blocks. (Previous pick: Spiller)

10. Jacksonville Jaguars
Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech
A pass rush is needed in Jacksonville. Aaron Kampman is happy to be in a Jaguars uniform, and no longer playing linebacker. The ACC's best defender from last year is a nice piece to add with Kampman. (Previous pick: Morgan)

11. Denver Broncos
Sergio Kindle, LB, Texas
Kindle is an explosive pass rusher, and more than one personnel director has told me that they like this Longhorn better than they liked former Texas star (and rookie Pro Bowler) Brian Orakpo. Still, would Josh McDaniels have some interest in developing a young QB, maybe one from Notre Dame? An inside linebacker makes sense, too. (Previous pick: Kindle)

12. Miami Dolphins
Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee
A strong final season in Knoxville really put this big man on the map. He would be a nice pick for GM Jeff Ireland, and football czar Bill Parcells. There are still some safeties on the board (Earl Thomas and Taylor Mays) that will merit discussion in South Florida. (Previous pick: Williams)

HQ video delivered by Akamai
13. San Francisco 49ers
Joe Haden, CB, Florida
An all-around excellent player who cleared up concerns about his speed at his pro day. He also does a fine job of blitzing from the slot, too. (Previous pick: Haden)

14. Seattle Seahawks
Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame
The 'Hawks QB of the future, who's from the West Coast, hooks up with a west coast head coach (Pete Carroll) who knows him well from their college days. (Previous pick: Dez Bryant)

15. New York Giants
Rolando McClain, LB, Alabama
He's awfully skilled, will strike, and has the smarts and savvy to run an NFL defense. The Giants will be fortunate if he is still available at this pick. (Previous pick: McClain)

16. Tennessee Titans
Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida
His lack of Division I game experience scares some people, but his athletic gifts have teams dreaming of double digit sack seasons in the near future. (Previous pick: Pierre-Paul)

17. San Francisco 49ers
Mike Iupati, G, Idaho
An area of need, some see this wrecking ball as a potential left tackle, too. RB Frank Gore sees him helping to clear a path to another Pro Bowl. (Previous pick: Iupati)

18. Pittsburgh Steelers
Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State
Offensive line is still an area of need, and there are good players available with this pick. But, my quick recollection of why the Steelers missed out on the playoffs drew me back to the defense. This may very well be the best corner in the draft. (Previous pick: Wilson)

HQ video delivered by Akamai
19. Atlanta Falcons
Brandon Graham, DE/OLB, Michigan
I have liked this non-stop pass rusher since I saw him play in the 2008 season, and in discussing him with a long-time observer of the league I am even more convinced that he's the type of player that the Falcons need and covet. (Previous pick: Graham)

20. Houston Texans
Patrick Robinson, CB, Florida State
I have been all over Houston's need for a consistent runner, but the loss of Dunta Robinson highlights the need for someone else to help slow down the Colts twice a year. (Previous pick: Ryan Mathews)

21. Cincinnati Bengals
Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma
He might have been a top-12 pick had he not gotten hurt and missed the 2009 season. I only see his knee improving, and his ability to flash his skills increasing in the near future. (Previous pick: Gresham)

22. New England Patriots
Jared Odrick, DT, Penn State
Versatile, can slide easily to the "5" technique in a base 3-4. He helps the Patriots rebuild their defensive line. (Previous pick: Sean Weatherspoon)

23. Green Bay Packers
Sean Weatherspoon, LB, Missouri
A guy that hollers a lot on the field, who would love to play inside linebacker and run the defense. His skill set is excellent for a team seeking an outside linebacker that can run and chase, and he could really help Pro Bowl rookie Clay Matthews. Offensive line is a need, too. (Previous pick: Robinson)

24. Philadelphia Eagles
Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida
The Eagles need a pass rusher opposite Trent Cole. They are counting on revving up this talented youngster's motor on a full-time basis. (Previous pick: Dunlap)

25. Baltimore Ravens
Earl Thomas, S, Texas
Ed Reed continues to be on top of his game, but while Thomas is prepping behind him, he can play in their nickel packages, and some corner, too. He is talented enough. (Previous pick: Odrick)

26. Arizona Cardinals
Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State
A steal of top-five talent for the high flying birds of the desert. Say thank you, Matt Leinart. (Previous pick: Thomas)

HQ video delivered by Akamai
27. Dallas Cowboys
Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers
With the release of Flozell Adams, this quickly became a need pick. Doug Free will get the first crack at the left tackle job, but this could be a steal for Dallas if he lives up to his immense potential. The need for a safety exists, too. (Previous pick: Bruce Campbell)

28. San Diego Chargers
Terrence Cody, DT, Alabama
Stats will never be his calling card because it's hard to make tackles while always occupying two people. His teammates will be grateful, though. (Previous pick: Cody)

29. New York Jets
Demaryius Thomas, WR, Georgia Tech
Risk vs. Reward. Thomas is coming off an injury and comes from an option offense, which did not run a sophisticated passing game or routes. But, he has everything else, and the ability to learn quickly. (Previous pick: Thomas)

30. Minnesota Vikings
Taylor Mays, S, USC
Still seeking a spot to elevate this fine player. I keep hearing what he can't do, but I have observed plenty of things he can do. He can assist shoring up the back end of the Vikings' defense. (Previous pick: Mays)

31. Indianapolis Colts
Maurkice Pouncey, C, Florida
Seriously, can he last this long? If so, Bill Polian chortles and sends the pick in early. No need for the full 10 minutes to call Jeff Saturday's eventual replacement. Until then, he'll play guard on a high level. (Previous pick: Pouncey)

32. New Orleans Saints
Tim Tebow, QB, Florida
I predicted Senior Bowl week that someone will fall in love with him and find a way to draft him in the first round, and it's time for me to stand by that statement. And the roar of shock, awe, approval, disapproval will be long and sustained as the first round concludes with his name called. Sean Payton would love to "mad scientist" this prospect that has invited so many differing opinions. I say he's an NFL QB, especially under the tutelage of the team that possesses the Lombardi Trophy. (Previous pick: Everson Griffen)

Carson Palmer's struggles limited the Bengals' passing game in 2009.
A weekly look at a player whose performance must improve in 2010.
The weapons surrounding Carson Palmer in Cincinnati's passing game were detrimental to success in that portion of its offense. Palmer played hurt, he only had one legitimate downfield threat to speak of in Chad Ochocinco, and the running backs and tight ends contributed very little as receiving threats. The blocking was much better suited for paving the way for Cedric Benson than in pass protection.
With all that being said, Palmer must play better."

Clausen shows injured toe is not an issue in workout for teams

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Former Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen tried to show NFL teams Friday he is worth a first-round draft pick, though he's still not 100 percent healthy three months after surgery to repair torn tendons in his right foot.

His receivers also needed to make some nice catches on several other throws, with former Notre Dame running back James Aldridge twisting back to catch a short pass on his shoulder and former Irish receiver David Grimes speeding up to make a fingertip grab on a 50-yard pass.

Clausen said he wanted to be able to show he could drive the ball. He said his toe feels fine, but the top of his ankle is weak after being in a boot for eight weeks.

Haynesworth trade is very possible

Could the Redskins give up on Albert Haynesworth only one year after giving him a seven-year contract that could be worth $100 million?

It is very possible. The Redskins mentioned Haynesworth's name in trade efforts to acquire Donovan McNabb, but the Eagles, who are getting younger, preferred draft choices. Philadelphia received a second-rounder this year and either a third- or fourth-round pick in 2011 for McNabb.

If he's traded, Haynesworth could go down as one of the biggest busts in the history of free agency, even though he's still one of the most dominating defensive players in football. The big issue is the Redskins' switch to the 3-4, a growing trend around the league. As many as 15 teams could line up in the 3-4 during the 2010 season.

The Redskins informed Haynesworth that his name was mentioned in the McNabb talks, but coach Mike Shanahan has to decide how he wants to handle the next step. It's now no secret that the Redskins are willing to shop him to other teams. The Lions, Rams and Titans are just a few of the options, but now Shanahan has to see how aggressive he wants to be in pushing for a trade.

Bradford selection 'catastrophic'?

Trent Dilfer's interview with 101ESPN St. Louis is worth a listen for those interested in a different take on quarterbacks.

[+] EnlargeTim Heitman/US Presswire
Quarterback Sam Bradford is an extremely raw prospect according to ESPN's Trent Dilfer.Dilfer thinks the Rams would be best off taking defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh first overall, then trading up from the 33rd pick to select Colt McCoy as their quarterback. He thinks Jimmy Clausen is by far the best college quarterback right now. He thinks Sam Bradford faces a tough transition. He sees McCoy as the player most likely to develop into the best quarterback from this draft.

What does Dilfer know? Well, he's played the position and studied the players. Dilfer said he has watched every 2009 snap from all three quarterbacks -- two and three times in some cases -- using a template he developed with input from Mike Holmgren, Brian Billick, Jim Zorn and others.

"This is my passion," Dilfer said during the interview.

Dilfer attributes Bradford's perceived rise to hype and misinformation from personnel people with agendas.

"In my opinion," Dilfer said of Bradford, "he is not even close to the best player in this draft."

Dilfer sees Bradford as extremely raw and a player who hasn't performed in a system even remotely close to the ones preferred by NFL teams. He thinks Bradford's accuracy falls off as the Oklahoma quarterback goes through his reads.

Further, drafting Bradford could be a "catastrophic mistake" for the Rams if they did not handle him properly.

"Bradford is a talented guy," Dilfer said. "I understand why the perception has become what it is -- because he looks good in shorts. But that is the way he has played football, too. He has played in a 7-on-7 environment, not an 11-on-11 environment."

McCoy's competitiveness, leadership and athletic ability to extend plays will set him apart over time, Dilfer predicted.

I'll be saving the link from this item for future reference.

DeSean Jackson's AMAZING Touchdown against the Chiefs

Eagles’ Jackson: ‘It was time for a change’

It’s expected that those in the Eagles locker room will throw their support behind new starting QB Kevin Kolb. Many will be sharing a huddle with him.

But for the first time Tuesday, we’re hearing someone on the Eagles say that a change was needed. That infers a problem existed, which presumably would need to be fixed. The quote came from Eagles WR DeSean Jackson, who seemed to suggest during a radio interview on The Fanatic ESPN Radio in Philadelphia that Donovan McNabb didn’t fit into the Eagles’ youth movement.

Without hearing how the question was asked, here’s what Jackson said.

“My reaction, you know, it was time for a change,” Jackson told Mike Missanelli. “We’ve got some young players here. I’ve got to say that I’m just excited about everything, and I feel all the players on our team are excited about it also.”

Maybe Jackson chose the wrong words, maybe he let it slip intentionally, or maybe he was just being more honest than we’re used to

Devaney: Rams still weighing options

ST. LOUIS -- A day after the St. Louis Rams released Marc Bulger, general manager Billy Devaney said it's far from certain that the team will take a quarterback with the first pick of the draft.

Smoke screens are typical this time of the year, but Devaney told the AP in a telephone interview Tuesday that the game plan hasn't changed even though the move leaves them with three inexperienced quarterbacks on the roster. Devaney said several players remain under consideration for the No. 1 pick, and refused to tip his hand whether Oklahoma's Sam Bradford was at the top of the list.

Roundup: Favre watch continues

Among free agent signings, trades and other roster moves last month, you might have forgotten about the quarterback situation in Minnesota. Brett Favre, who led the Vikings to the NFC Championship game last season, hasn’t told team officials whether or not he plans to play next season.

And he may keep the team waiting. Sound familiar?

Vikings coach Brad Childress sounded like he has plenty of patience left as he discussed the 40-year old quarterback during a radio interview with KSTP:

“I still don’t, one way or the other,” Childress said. “I don’t know if he’s even thought about it or contemplated it. I [talked] with him briefly last week and I’m sure we’ll narrow it down as we get a little bit further.”

Rams end speculation, release Bulger

The Rams took the limbo out of Marc Bulger’s future in St. Louis, releasing the veteran quarterback on Monday.
